The Treadwell Factor

The Ramapo Roadrunners men’s basketball season ended abruptly last season with an 86-78 loss to Morrisville State College in the NCAA tournament. Stephon Treadwell, a senior power forward for the Roadrunners, can look back on a vigorous season with this being his final game in a Ramapo Jersey.

In the previous season, Treadwell and the Roadrunners won a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) championship for the first time in the last six years. This was a memorable season for Treadwell.

What made this season so remarkable for him was finally recording his 1,000th career point in a game against Richard Stockton College.

Treadwell was not the only player on the team to receive great rewards and accolades, fellow seniors Elgin Brown and Will Sanborn were named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Metro Men’s Basketball All-Star teams.

“It’s great playing with these guys, you never know what to expect during the season,” said Treadwell. “I am just happy to be apart of something special.”

“It was great,” Treadwell said at the end of the season. “All of our hard work over the last year finally paid off.”

Treadwell started playing basketball in eighth grade on a traveling team (aau) called Something Special.  He then went on to attend Seton Hall Prep High School located in West Orange, N.J. “I feel like I learned how to play the sport in high school and then began to study the game like an art due to the hard work my high school coach instilled in me.”

Treadwell played basketball for legendary coach Bob Farrell.

“I learned so much at Seton Hall Prep from Farrell”, who retired from coaching in after more than 30 years and had a little over 750 wins at the school.

Treadwell graduated high school in 2009. He was recruited by Ramapo to come and play basketball and to study business management.

After Treadwell’s first season at Ramapo under a new coach Chuck McBreen, “Treadwell earned a starting spot for the team right away.”

“He does everything and more,” said coach McBreen. Treadwell grew up with academics as a first priority over everything else. He knows that he is a student first and playing ball comes second to it. “He plays hard in practice, and he plays hard in games,” said coach McBreen.

Treadwell’s cumulative GPA was a 3.0 while attending Ramapo.

In Treadwell’s final season he was second on the team in points with 391. He averaged about 14 points per game and finished second on the team in rebounds and third in blocks.

“I just want to thank the coaches, all of them, even the ones who didn’t really know who I was coming into the program. “Most importantly I want to thank the team, the fans and the school for their support.”

Following this season Treadwell will graduate from Ramapo, and hopes to play oversees to play basketball.

Though he believes that the team could have gone deeper into the NCAA tournament, Treadwell said that his most memorable moment at Ramapo was winning the NJAC championship game. “I guess dreams really do come true,” said Treadwell.
