A sea of popping colors swarmed the red carpet in Hollywood as celebrities arrived for the 64th Emmy Awards on Sunday.

This year the most noticeable trend on the red carpet on Sept. 23 was bold, statement colors like blue, orange and yellow. Actresses Sofia Vergara and Heidi Klum ramped up the femininity in shades of blue. Vergara, a star in the award-winning show, “Modern Family” wore a teal Suhair Murad gown with a cut out back and halter neck and Klum sported a plunging neckline and high slits in her sea foam colored gown by Alexandre Vauthier.

Ana Elisa Sene, former president of Rent the Runway DePaul and founder of DePaul University’s Fashion Club, based in Chicago, said that Vergara and Klum sizzled and were appropriate for this transition period from summer to fall, but felt that nobody sported blue better than Maria Menounos.

“Maria’s bare decollete stood out with her low ponytail and sweetheart neckline. The slit in the gown and the pleated train were done just right,” Sene said.

Hayden Panettiere stole the show as one of the best dressed, looking like a Greek goddess in her Merchesa gown.

“The gold sparkled on her tan complexion and the blue drapes accentuated her figure,” Sene said.

Red Carpet Disasters

While most of the ladies in blue got it right, there were some disaster gowns. The “Once Upon a Time” star, Ginnifer Goodwin, wore a gown that overwhelmed her small frame. Goodwin’s shape was hidden by the boxy dress. The orange, Monique Lhuiller gown was loud, large and busy with orange detail.

“I can’t believe this is even a dress. It looks like curtains,” Sene said.

Julianne Moore wore a mustard yellow Dior, knit, sweater gown. A close neckline and long sleeves were unflattering for Moore’s chest, arms and waistline. Julianna Marguiles of “The Good Wife” also did not seem bothered by the heat in a thick, floral, brocade gown.

“She [Marguiles] had to be so uncomfortable in the 90 degree weather. It looked like she was wearing a bed quilt,” said Kristen Castoro of Hopatcong, who viewed the 64th Emmy Awards on television.

Ashley Judd, who was nominated for Outstanding Actress in a TV Movie/Miniseries, selected an unflattering, pink gown with a halter neck. The gown by Carolina Herrera hugged Judd in all of the wrong places and did not seem well tailored on some parts of the body.

“Ashley Judd had one of the worst red carpet misses this year. The big poof in her hair took it to a whole other level,” Castoro said.

Most of the stand outs on the red carpet wore figure friendly, light fabric gowns and went for little to no jewelry, showing their long lean legs or bare decollete as their only accessories. Although the trend was bold color, the bright hues and heavy fabrics were disappointing at the Emmy Awards.

The statements made on the red carpet were bold, indicating that celebrities are steering away from black and other classic looks and will be taking risks with statement colors this upcoming award season.
